The Road To Redemption

Talk about Fish long enough and you will learn that there is Fish the tennis player, and Fish the person. The player might have had his struggles, but the person was always very popular with the boys. And the girls.

“Mardy was like any other teenager,” says Boster. “He enjoyed all sports, cars, music and girls.”

And the girls must have enjoyed Mardy. His wife, the lovely actress Stacey Gardner, gets more stares from the Centre Court crowd than Hawkeye.

“The first thing that comes to my mind with Mardy is a good time,” says Blake. “He is someone that is always making people laugh. When we were younger and playing a lot of doubles together, I remember that some of the other doubles players thought we weren't taking it seriously. Yet we played great and were trying, but we just had so much fun that we were laughing the whole time we were on the court.”

It was billed as the Battle of Bogota. A Davis Cup World Group play-off tie between Colombia and the United States of America. The warm sunny days that Bogota enjoyed all week came to end on the final day of the tie. It was a damp, grey Sunday morning when play started in the Plaza de Toros. The bullring was draped in the tricolour of the Colombian flag; yellow, red and blue. As the Colombian crowd entered the Plaza de Toros wearing sombreros, tight fitting blue jeans and leather cowboy boots, Fish entered the bullring with his ball cap pulled down low and dressed like a Ralf Lauren poster boy. However, image was the last thing on this quiet American’s mind. He might as well have entered with a hard hat and tool box for it was obvious by his demeanour and five-set win on the first day and four-set doubles win on the previous, that he was not leaving Colombia until it was 'Mission Accomplished'.

The Road To Redemption
by
Robert Davis

Last year, Mardy Fish resurrected his career; realising that athletic ability was not enough to survive on the ATP World Tour. By maturing into a true professional, the American was able to regain his Top 20 ranking.

Mardy Fish is currently No. 16 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings.

Mardy Fish tried his best to put on a brave face. Still he could not stop the tears from streaming down. The red, white and blue flag being raised for the gold medal winner on the podium at the Athens Olympics was not the Stars and Stripes. And the national anthem that was playing was definitely not the Star Spangled Banner. Rather the Himno Nacional de Chile. It all seemed like a bad dream to the young American. Less than an hour earlier, he was on the verge of making it a dream come true. A sharp pain seared through his body. It was greater than any injury he had ever experienced. It was the nasty, brutal kind. The tennis gods had played a cruel joke on the talented Mr. Fish.

Roddick in second straight-sets win

Victor Hanescu of Romania survived an injury scare on Centre Court but could not prevent eighth seed Andy Roddick winning their second round match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

The match between the 29-year-old Hanescu was in the fourth game of the second set, with Roddick ahead by a set and 2-1, when the Romanian slipped as he advanced to the net to try to change the course of a rally. Hanescu left his racket on the grass and walked slowly to his chair, flexing his racket hand as he did so. He asked for an injury time-out and had treatment while Roddick, a towel around his neck, waited in his own chair.

ANDY RODDICK: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

Both Decker and Stefanki were present in Roddick’s corner at Wimbledon a year later when his
perseverance was rewarded by reaching a thirdWimbledon final. For four hours and 16 minutes against Federer, Roddick led his supporters on a rollercoaster of emotions. He had a two-set lead on his racquet in the second set tie-break, but a haunting backhand volley error reprieved Federer. In a phenomenal serving display, Roddick did not lose serve until the final game of the match as Federer clinched victory 16-14 in the 95-minute fifth set.

perseverance: 毅力,堅忍不拔
reprieve: 暫緩,暫時解救

“I think a point here or there in that second set ultimately cost him at the end,”
laments Stefanki. “But I’m very proud of the way he dug himself back out of that negative situation. As well as Andy served, I’ve been around since Roger was 17 and I’ve seen a lot of matches he’s played; that was the best I’ve seen him serve. That’s the agony of sports: There’s going to be a loser and a winner.”

lament: 為....悲痛 (這裡指Stefanki沉痛的表示前面所述的)
agony: 苦惱,極度痛苦

Just how do you pick yourself up after a defeat like that? With Roddick, his competitive spirit just would not be
quelled. Gimelstob recalls that, in typicalAndy Roddick fashion, pizzas were ordered, the match was dissected, and then it was put to bed. “It hurt him a lot, and it was emotional and a brutal situation. He has regrets, but he was also proud of the way he competed and played on a huge stage.”

ANDY RODDICK: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

In the never-ending battle for survival on the ATP World Tour, all players must evolve to remain in the hunt. Three-time Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick is the first to admit that he's no exception to the rule.

Roddick has finished in the year-end Top 10 for nine consecutive years, and calls his consistency the proudest achievement of his career.

Look for a more humble and appreciative Andy Roddick at the All England Lawn Tennis Club this year than the one who made his debut with a third-round exit to eventual champion Goran Ivanisevic in 2001. Playing in the Roger Federer - Rafael Nadal era can chasten any man. With age and experience comes perspective, and Roddick has it in abundance. “There’s regrets in matches, but I sleep well knowing I’ve been professional and I’ve done what I’ve needed to,” the 28 year old tells DEUCE during the AEGON Championships.

chasten:  使磨鍊,使和緩
in abundance: 充足,富有,大量
