M. SAFIN/F. Dancevic

7-5, 7-6, 7-6

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. Enough going on in that match for you to lose your cool, but you didn't. Are you pleased with the way you kept your poise today?
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, pretty much. I was a little bit nervous coming into the match 'cause the guy was playing pretty well the last two months. He did a great result. Here in the States he made the final in Indianapolis, beating Roddick in semifinal, and quarterfinals in Montréal. So he was pretty solid and confident coming here.
I never play against him. He's serving well, returning well, playing great from the baseline, full of confidence. Especially it's a first round, so he has nothing to lose. Anything can happen. It was pretty good.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. How was that hit today?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, it was good. I got here a week ago. I've gotten in a lot of practices. So feeling good.

Q. What was the US Open Series shoot like? Was it as much fun as it looked? Other players? Just you?

They Said WHAT?! US Open Outtakes
by Stephanie Norris
Posted Date: Saturday, September 9, 2006

During the two weeks of the US Open, players join media for a post-match interview to discuss tactics, concerns, and, quite frankly, some completely nonsensical topics. Here at USOpen.org, our writers review the dozens of transcripts that come through each day and have compiled a list of some favorite Q & A highlights. These are the questions that the reporters shouldn’t have asked, and the answers that the players definitely shouldn’t have given.

Take two! You won’t believe your eyes.

Lost to R. Federer 2-6 6-4 5-7 6-1
TIM CURRY: Questions, please.

Q. Can you summarize your match tonight.

ANDY RODDICK: Uhm, I can try.

I thought it was a pretty high level of tennis, especially those two middle sets. There wasn't much between us. I feel like I gave myself a chance. I had some breakpoint opportunities there in the third and played some decent points on them. I competed hard, you know. Disappointed, but I'm also proud of the two weeks that I had here.

An interview with: TOMMY HAAS

lost to Davydenko 6-4 7-6(3) 6-3 6-4 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Tommy.

Q. Seemed awfully frustrated in that fifth set. Sort of hitting yourself with the racquet. Do you feel mentally like you were letting the match get away from you by that point?
TOMMY HAAS: Not really. I mean, I think in the fifth set, for me, it was probably more physically than anything. Uhm, you know, my body didn't feel as good anymore. Couldn't really do the small steps to stand well to the balls. Was making too many unforced errors that way, couldn't cover the court as well as I did the first three, four sets.
You know, you start thinking a little bit too much. Breakpoint, obviously in the fourth set that I had, I don't know if I had two even, but one I didn't make him play and, you know, that's frustrating.

An interview with: TOMMY HAAS

def. M. Safin 4-6 6-3 2-6 6-2 7-6(5)

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. If you make it to the finals, you'll have to play four out of five days just because of the rain, scheduling, stuff. Can you talk about that, three out of five set matches on hard courts.
TOMMY HAAS: If I will make it there, then I wouldn't really care, if it was in the last three or four days obviously. So, you know, you can't really do anything about Mother nature, you just have to play by it. Can't really control of how you play and how you win. But I'm still here. I'm still in the race. That's obviously for me the most important thing. Winning another thriller match today against Marat, it's obviously, you know, a great feeling.
So I'm really happy to be in the quarterfinals once again, and, you know, no matter how I feel really, I'm looking forward to the next match.

Def. L. Hewitt 6-3 7-5 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Andy.

Q. You look pretty happy.
ANDY RODDICK: I am happy.

Q. Can you talk about your happiness a little.

Def. Robby Ginepri 7-6(1) 6-4 3-6 3-6 7-6(1)

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. The first two sets you won 3 and 4, then he won. Then the fifth set, the tiebreak, you dominated. What happened in that tiebreak that was different from the rest of the match?
TOMMY HAAS: Tough to say really. I mean, I think we both knew that it's coming down, you know, to the guy that wins the first seven you know, seven points. I don't know, I was just really trying to, uhm, try to stay aggressive because that was kind of what helped me to get there.
I made some pretty good serves, some deep, long returns. Yeah, gave me a few unforced errors to also feel pretty good and confident to take the win.

Q. You always seem to bring the best out in each other when you play. Like this year and last year, long, five setters.
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, pretty much. We've had quite a few battles now. Always some good tennis is involved. Always actually very close. I think head to head now I'm 4 1. Even last year here, I think it was quite a good match where he got the better of me in the fifth set. You know, he was very close again of, you know, at 4 3 in the fifth, Love 40, he had three chances to break me and serve it out. I was thinking about that maybe he can win again 6 3 in the fifth.

THE MODERATOR: First question.

Q. You had so many break chances in that fifth set where you could have went ahead and really put the pressure on him. Never seemed to get over the hump there.
ROBBY GINEPRI: Yeah, he came up with some good serves at the right time. That was the difference. I mean, great match throughout the whole five sets and, you know, it's tough to walk away with that.
But, you know, I competed well out there, so I got to be happy about that.

Q. The eleventh game of the final set, long, grinding point. There was a shot that everyone is looking for you to play to sort of reestablish yourself. Then the tiebreak, just blew apart. Is there any explanation for that?
ROBBY GINEPRI: No, if I had one right now, I'd share it with you. But it's frustrating to play a match like that. Losing two tiebreaks, 7 1, I mean, that's devastating. I need to figure out what to do in the tiebreak. I didn't make enough first serves, I know that. Missed a couple easy shots that I shouldn't have missed. I guess I just need to buckle down a little bit harder and, you know, I'll learn from this match like all the other losses.

An interview with: ANDY RODDICK

def. B. Becker 6-3 6-4 6-3

ANDY RODDICK: I don't know about you guys, do you think this is product placement? What do you think? I'm guessing (holding up an Evian bottle).
I could just be calling myself a loser, too.
THE MODERATOR: First question, please.
